The Tomioka Silk Mill was established in 1872 as a government-operated mechanical silk-reeling factory and was key in the spread of silk-reeling machine technology throughout Japan. In 2014, the “Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites” were registered as a World Heritage Site.
