This well-known restaurant grew out of a food cart in the 1950’s. Practically everyone in Hiroshima is familiar with it and they’re accustomed to assisting tourists as well. Their original sauce and their particular way of chopping their cabbages (which come in fresh daily), makes for a superb okonomiyaki.

2. Hassho [Kanayamacho]

 

This famous okonomiyaki restaurant has a number of hopeful apprentices. Their soba is fried until the outside become crisp and the slightly thick crepe-like batter is exquisite. Since this shop is only open for business during lunch however, there is always a long line so it’s recommended to get there before it opens!

3. Imada [Funakoshi]

 

Looking for a shop that’s not specifically geared towards tourists? If so, then come to this residential area! Although the woman running the restaurant trained at a prestigious establishment, she can be seen chatting away with the regular customers while cooking the okonomiyaki in true Hiroshima fashion. The ample cabbage is carefully cooked so it's sweetness is amazing.

4. Rei-chan [Hiroshima Station]

 

This restaurant was established in 1957. It’s located in a convenient location, in the building directly across from Hiroshima station and they offer an English menu so you can breathe easier. Pork, vegetables and eggs are the standard ingredients and you can add toppings based on your preferences. Adding tender noodles is a standard.

5. ロペズ [横川]

 

This restaurant is managed by a Guatemalan shopkeeper. Trained at a prestigious restaurant, he went his own way 15 years ago and set up a popular shop in his hometown. The noodles are fried until they’re crisp and topped with a soft-boiled egg in a harmony that’s addicting. Various toppings like Jalapeno is part of this shop’s originality so people who like spicy food should definitely give it a try!

6. Daichan [Hikarimachi]

 

Even in Hiroshima, this is a famous okonomiyaki restaurant that specializes in home delivery. Inside the restaurant doesn’t feel like an okonomiyaki restaurant, with its spacious interior where you can comfortably relax. Their tender noodles is said to be like the old-fashioned okonomiyaki. Since they even have service a la carte, you can enjoy the feeling of being at a bar.

7. お好み魂 悟空 [八丁堀]

 

Using large eggs and very fine noodles, this okonomiyaki is carefully cooked in a perfect circle. Although there is a fair amount of seasoning added, it is fluffy and light and easy to eat. The inside of the restaurant is always immaculate and spacious so even if you bring your family along or come in a group, you can take your time and eat.
