Tokyo Tower - History and 2024 Renewal

Tokyo Tower, officially known as "Nippon Denpato" (Japan Radio Tower), has stood as a symbol of Japan’s post-war recovery and technological progress since its completion in 1958. Built during Japan's rapid economic growth, the tower was conceived to meet the growing demand for television signal transmission. Instead of constructing multiple smaller towers, a single, tall structure was chosen to ensure citywide coverage for Tokyo’s expanding broadcast network.

Over the decades, Tokyo Tower has evolved beyond its original role, serving as a cultural and tourist landmark visited by millions each year. In 2024, the tower underwent a major renewal of its popular “Top Deck Tour” and introduced the premium “TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR.” This marked the most significant update to the tower's visitor experience since the Top Deck Tour's launch in 2018.

The 2024 renewal embraces the theme “Memories of Tokyo Tower,” highlighting the landmark’s historical and emotional connection with its visitors by taking them on a journey through time, enriched by historical photos, materials such as newspapers, and projection mapping.

The renewal draws inspiration from the beautiful Japanese-style Koyokan, which once stood where the Tokyo Tower now rises. Adorned with maple leaves, this prestigious social venue opened in 1881 for diplomats and cultural figures but was unfortunately destroyed during World War II. Honoring Koyokan’s spirit of hospitality, which has also defined Tokyo Tower from its very beginnings, the redesigned Top Deck Tour and the new TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR incorporate elements of Koyokan’s traditional Japanese aesthetic, with “momiji” (maple leaves) serving as a key visual.

Unique Features of the Tokyo Tower Main Deck

From the Tokyo Tower Main Deck, located 150 meters above ground, visitors can enjoy closer views of nearby landmarks, including the sprawling greenery of Shiba Park, the majestic Zojoji Temple, and the dynamic skyline of Tokyo.

The immersive view is further enhanced by the Skywalk Window, a thrilling glass floor section that allows guests to look straight down to the ground below, offering a unique perspective of the tower's height and structure.

The Main Deck is also home to the Tower Daijingu Shrine, one of the highest shrines in Tokyo. This space provides visitors with a peaceful spot to pray while soaking in the atmosphere of the tower. The shrine also features Tokyo Tower-themed "ema" votive plaques and "omamori" amulets.

For those looking to bring home a piece of their experience, the Main Deck also houses a well-stocked souvenir shop offering a variety of unique items, from Tokyo Tower-themed memorabilia to exclusive snacks.

Unique Features of the Tokyo Tower Top Deck

The Tokyo Tower Top Deck, located 250 meters above ground, offers panoramic views that stretch across the vast Tokyo metropolis and beyond. From this breathtaking vantage point, visitors can take in sweeping vistas of landmarks such as the Tokyo Skytree, the Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba, and on clear days, even the majestic Mount Fuji. The expansive glass windows of the Top Deck provide a 360-degree view, making it the perfect spot to capture stunning photos of Tokyo!

Discover Tokyo Tower’s New Exciting Tours: Renewed Top Deck Tour vs TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR

Top Deck Tour

The 2024 version of the Top Deck Tour features a complete redesign of five key locations: the Top Deck Gate, Tower Archives, Memories Library, Koh-Yo-Kan Maple Club Elevator Hall, and Recollection Gate.

The tour begins at the Top Deck Gate, which leads visitors from the Main Deck (150m) to the Top Deck (250m), now easily recognizable with the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR logo. Requiring advance reservation for a specified time, the tour ensures a seamless and organized experience.

Inside, the Tower Archives showcase Tokyo Tower's construction and the city's changing views across 59 monitors.

Next, guests enter the Koh-Yo-Kan Maple Club, an elevator hall inspired by the historic Koyokan. Nestled within the tower’s 250-meter ascent, this exclusive elevator hall offers a serene pause during the Top Deck Tour. Guests are welcomed into an elegant space designed with a nod to traditional Japanese aesthetics, featuring glowing maple-inspired golden accents that evoke a sense of autumnal warmth. The ceiling showcases a design reminiscent of traditional latticework, complemented by chromed details and a round window that evokes classic Japanese architecture.

Adding to the allure, the Koh-Yo-Kan Maple Club is also home to the "Memory Keeper," a dedicated photographer who captures guests as they enjoy the view.

There's even complimentary drinks guests can indulge in while taking in the unique view of Tokyo’s cityscape framed by the tower's steel structure, the only spot in Tokyo Tower offering this perspective.

From here, guests proceed to the Top Deck, where panoramic views of Tokyo await. The experience concludes at the Recollection Gate, a poignant finale where scenes from the day—including the visitors themselves, fellow guests, tower staff, and glimpses of Tokyo Tower—are displayed. This thoughtful touch symbolizes each guest’s contribution to the tower’s living legacy, making their visit a part of its enduring memory.

TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR

The TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR takes the Top Deck Tour to the next level, offering everything included in the standard experience and the redesigned Top Deck Tour’s five key locations, with the addition of luxurious perks and exclusive access.

Limited to just 10 participants per tour, the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR provides an intimate, crowd-free visit. Available year-round with hourly departures from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, it requires advance reservations, ensuring an exclusive journey with no wait times.

Another perk of the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR is the dedicated guide who accompanies guests throughout their visit. Their expert guidance ensures every detail is taken care of, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking views and luxurious surroundings for a truly hassle-free experience.

The TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR is made even more memorable by the presence of performers who bring the rich history of Tokyo Tower to life. These historical characters engage visitors with light-hearted interactions, adding an entertaining and immersive element to the tour. You’ll meet them at various spots throughout your visit, making your time at the tower not only magical but fun!

Upon arrival, guests begin their experience in the MAPLE LOUNGE, a space exclusive to TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR participants. Here, visitors can relax in a maple-themed space adorned with historical displays from Tokyo Tower’s early days, such as vintage photos and newspapers.

As you wait for the tour to start, unwind on the comfy maple-red sofas and choose from a selection of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, tea, and more, along with soft drinks and snacks like Tokyo Tower-themed cookies and chocolates.

When the time comes to begin your journey, your dedicated performers will greet you with a special live opera piece, designed to set the tone for the luxurious TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR ahead.

From the MAPLE LOUNGE, participants proceed to the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR Priority Lane, an exclusive entrance that offers fast-track access to the tour. Marked by the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR logo, this private lane ensures a VIP experience from the very beginning.

At the priority lane, before taking the elevator up to the Main Deck, you'll have the opportunity to get to know your dedicated guides and fellow participants, while receiving an interesting explanation about the history of Tokyo Tower.

The TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR then guides guests through the Main Deck, Top Deck Gate, Tower Archives, Memories Library, Koh-Yo-Kan Maple Club Elevator Hall, and Top Deck, providing priority access to each of these iconic locations.

At the end of the tour, guests return to the MAPLE LOUNGE, where a special keepsake awaits: a professionally framed photograph taken during the tour. This exclusive gift commemorates your visit and serves as a personal token of your time at Tokyo Tower. Unlike the standard Top Deck Tour, where one photo is given per group, the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR ensures each participant receives their own framed souvenir.

Finally, participants of the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR can also re-enter the MAPLE LOUNGE throughout the day, enjoying the space until 7:00 pm, and can visit the Main Deck however many times they want until closing at 11:00 pm.
