20 Must-Go Sushi Restaurants in Sapporo, Hokkaido

Hokkaido is surrounded by sea and naturally counts seafood as its speciality. Freshly caught seafood are generously used for sushi so you wouldn't want to miss eating sushi when you are in Sapporo. We have selected some seriously good sushi restaurants in Sapporo City for you to choose from.

1. Sushikazu (鮨一)

Sushikazu is a restaurant with modern and sophisticated exterior. You can enjoy fresh seafood of Hokkaido skilfully prepared by its top-notch sushi chefs. It is slightly out of down town but ever so popular so it's best making a reservation in advance.

2. Kinzushi (金寿司)

Kinzushi has an ambience of a traditional and a welcoming sushi eatery.  It offers various  freshly caught local seafood at a reasonable price. It is also open at lunch time. Be sure to get there early to beat the crowd.

3. Sushizen Honten (すし善 本店)

Sushizen is a nationwide chain of sushi restaurants offering sushi with Edomae technique using ingredients from Hokkaido. Its flagship restaurant is in Susukino. Many apprentices come here to be trained as sushi chefs so without a doubt the sushi offered here are first class. This is therefore the place worth visiting to experience the craftsmanship.

4. Susukino Sushikin (薄野鮨金)

Susukino Sushikin is a legendary shop in Susukino, Sapporo. The owner is particular about using mainly local ingredients and his technique for preparing sushi is rather unique. It would be an interesting sushi dining experience for sure and worth a try if you are in the area.

5. Otaru Masazushi Susukino Shop (おたる政寿司 すすきの店)

Masazushi has its main shop in Otaru. It is reputed to have trained some of the best sushi chefs in the country.  If you want to savor the sushi with fresh local ingredients made with first class technique, this is the place to be.

6. Nemuro Hanamaru (根室 花まる)

For a conveyor belt sushi experience in Sapporo, try Nemuro Hanamaru. It has several shops in Sapporo but the one in JR Tower STELLA PLACE is adjacent to JR Sapporo Station and easy to access.  We recommend this place for dining first class revolving sushi without breaking your wallet.

7. Nagoyaka Tei (なごやか亭)

Nagoyaka Tei is a chain of conveyor belt sushi restaurants with 9 shops in Sapporo. They may be located outside of town center but each shop is popular among locals for serving good quality sushi at a fair and reasonable price. So next time you are in Sapporo it would be worth heading to one of the shops of Nagoyaka Tei.

8. Sakana Isshin (魚一心)

Another good conveyor belt sushi restaurant frequented by locals. There are 2 shops in Sapporo including the one in Susukino Lafila which can be accessed directly from Susukino Station. Sakana Isshin is run by a local fishmonger so the freshness of seafood is guaranteed. If you want to eat sushi with a local touch, this is definitely the place to go.

9. Kaitenzushi Toriton (回転寿し トリトン)

Toriton has 8 conveyor belt sushi shops in the suburbs of Sapporo, each of which are popular among the local inhabitants. You can enjoy a value for money sushi feast prepared with the latest seasonal ingredients from the local source.

10. Toppii (とっぴぃ)

Toppii is famous for affordable and delicious revolving sushi. There are 7 outlets in Sapporo including Soen Shop conveniently located with a direct access from the JR Soen Station, which is just one stop from Sapporo Station. Superbly fresh seafood on offer are mainly from Hokkaido.

11. Waraku (和楽)

Waraku has 3 belt conveyor sushi restaurants in Sapporo. Seafood from Hokkaido together with many ingredients from Western Japan, you will be offered with vast varieties of sushi to choose from.

12. Sushiya no Yamada (すし屋のやま田)

Sushiya no Yamada has a quarter-century of history since it was founded in Susukino.  The owner knows all about the history of Susukino. By savoring each sushi he prepares with attention to detail, one can tell his skills were perfected over the course of long time.

13. Sushisai Wakichi (鮨菜 和喜智)

Sushisai Wakichi is a strictly reservation-only sushi restaurant located in the residential area of Maruyama district. It takes pride in its Shari, the sushi rice, using rice from Hokkaido. It enhances the flavor of Neta, the seafood topping.  Wakichi is in search of originality in its sushi to make it truly stand out as a speciality of Hokkaido. So try and reserve a table while you are in Hokkaido- you won't be disappointed.

14. Sushiya no Negami (すし屋の根がみ)

Sushiya no Negami is just 3-minute walk from either Susukino or Hosuisusukino Stations of Sapporo City Subway.  It offers sushi prepared with fresh and delicious seasonal seafood brought in from all over the nation. Open at lunch time.

15. Uokashi Hikari Zushi (魚河岸ひかり寿司)

This sushi shop is located in Sapporo Central Wholesale Market, the so-called kitchen of Sapporo City.  And because it is located in the market, you can indulge in sushi with rare seafood at a reasonable price.  You can also enjoy the lively atmosphere of the market while tucking into your sushi.

16. Katsuissen (活一鮮)

Katsuissen mainly uses the locally sourced seafood for its sushi. Its shop in NORBESA is ideally situated in an extremely convenient location yet it doesn't get overcrowded like any other popular conveyor belt sushi chain shops. We cannot recommend more of this sushi eatery when you are in a hurry.

17. Sushi no Uomasa (鮨の魚政)

Uomasa is located in the Curb Market of Sapporo Central Wholesale Market. Its opening hours are between 6:30 and 12:00 in the morning, so be there bright and early. Because it is close to the wholesale market its sushi can't get any fresher.

18. Sushidokoro Hyoutan (すし処 ひょうたん)

Sushidokoro Hyoutan serves  not the widely popular Edomae style but the local-style sushi. It is conveniently located within a short walking distance from Susukino Subway Station.  If you want to try a luxurious local sushi in Sapporo you would like this place.

19. Oshidori (おしどり)

The owner of Oshidori gets his ingredients including seafood from his hometown of Rumoi, a city of abundant food ingredients. He knows the goodness of Rumoi inside out and the wonderful seasonal foods on offer.  So trust his judgement and you would be pleased you paid a visit.

20. Nakazushi (仲寿司)

This is an upmarket sushi restaurant in Minamibashi district of Susukino.  You can experience a fine dining of sushi over some luxurious glasses of wine and champagne. Reservation in advance is recommended.
