Deigo in Taketomi Island
In April, those red flowers start to bloom in Taketomi Island.
Those are called “deigo” in Okinawa, in English they are called “Indian coral trees”, and you can see them on the way to the villages from Taketomi Harbor.
In Okinawa, deigo flowers are the sign of good luck, for instance, passing the entrance exam or things like that.
It is also said that a big typhoon will hit the island after deigo flowers get in full-bloom very beautifully in April. It’s kind of a bad luck.
Typhoons come anyway, but hope we don’t get a huge one.
If you’re in Okinawa, you can see shell gingers everywhere.
The colors of the flower is white and pink, and the shape is like a bell.
It’s called “getto” in Japanese, and it’s called “san-nin” in Okinawa.
