History

NAHA GIANT TUG -OF -WAR is the greatest traditional cultural event in Okinawa.
They had tug-of-war events to pray for good harvest and rain traditionally, but it was ceased in 1935.
This giant event started on the 10th of October in 1971 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Naha-municipal government.

First day

On the first day, you can see the parade of local dance or music groups on International street, the center of Naha.

Second day

On the 2nd day, Hatagashira parade is held on International Street, and the Guinness certified giant tug-of-war is held on route 58’s Kumoji Intersection.

Before the tag-of-war, the parade of Hatagashira(flag leaders) is held by many young men. They are representatives from there communities.

In the events, there are many unique and traditional events going on.
Finger whistles, firecrackers, drums and Karate‐shows are all parts of the festival.

Third day

The 3rd day is when people enjoy live music shows, karaoke competition and sumo wrestling.

It’s on the GUINESS BOOK of Records

In1995, the event was recorded as “the world’s largest straw rope” by the Guinness Book of Records.
Naha Tug of war is now recognized as the leading Tug of War in the world!
It is the pride of Naha City and Okinawa prefecture.
