As most people live far away from their work (because it’s cheaper to live outside Tokyo), they have to wake up early in the morning to be at work on time. The commuting time is so long that most Japanese people suffer from lack of sleep. The Japanese train is super comfy, it has heater under the seats during winter and air–conditioning in the summer, and it is also very safe. That makes it the perfect place for exhausted persons to sleep.
Some people are so exhausted that they sleep with their mouth open!
Here is a (certainly) drunk salaryman sleeping in a weird position.
Sometimes, people can completely fall asleep in the train. When that happens, they don’t really control their body anymore and let their head rest on some stranger’s shoulder.
Some people like to read a book or study while riding the train.
Playing video games
It’s not rare to see a Japanese salaryman on the train playing intensely on his console.
Japanese women are mostly playing games on their phone and not on console like men.
Looking at your phone
On this picture, almost every passenger is looking at their phone. Sending emails, surfing on the internet, looking at pictures etc.
Although this is considered as a bad manner, we often see girls, sometimes old women as well doing their makeup on the train, especially during the morning.
Here is a girl who thought she was at home.
