Temaki Sushi (hand roll style)

Temaki sushi is a type of sushi that you make on your own. It doesn’t need any cooking utensils to roll. Only thing you need to do is to choose the ingredients you want to eat and wrap it nicely with seaweed topped with rice!

In this way, it’s easy to prepare and you can have a lot of varieties of sushi.

Preparation

What you have to prepare is as follows.
1) Rice -better to get sushi rice or Calrose rice
2) Seaweed – Japanese seaweed for sushi. normally square.
3) Neta(what to put inside) – can be anything
(Preference)
-seafood(salmon, tuna, squid, salmon roe, prawn, crab stick)
-vegetable(cucumber, carrots, white radish sprouts)
-others(avocado, canned tuna, natto, egg omelet)
4) Soy sauce
5) Wasabi and Mayonnaise(if you like)

Sushi rice is seasoned with Japanese vinegar.
If you don’t like it, it can be just plain rice.

You can get Japanese sushi vinegar at super markets or make it by yourself.
The recipe is as follows;
For 4 cup of rice (1 cup= 180 ml), use 1/2 cup of Japanese vinegar+ 5 Tbsp of sugar + 1 tsp of salt

Then once rice is ready, it has to be cooled down.

There is particular seaweed for sushi. It’s normally sold in a large size, so for temaki sushi, seaweed papers need to be cut into about 10cm × 10cm.

If you would like to try something new, Korean seaweed is also nice to have sushi with.
It’s seasoned with sesame oil and salt so it gives more flavors.
Just be careful that Korean ones are thinner and can easily torn.

Neta

Neta(things to put inside of sushi) needs to be cut to sticks. The stick shouldn’t be too wide and longer than seaweed. But this doesn’t matter so far as it can be rolled.

Time to Roll

First put the seaweed paper on your palm and spread rice on top. If you put too much rice, it will not be rolled well.

Then, put Neta. You can try your own combination of Neta.

Lastly, roll the seaweed like a cone, then dip it in soy sauce and eat!
