CanCam is one of the so-called “red letter magazines” in the country, along with fellow magazines ViVi, Ray, PINKY, and JJ. They received the title because they usually have their names in eye-catching red letters on the cover.
CanCam is also geared towards women in their late teens to mid-20s.
OL is the abbreviation for “office lady,” or women who work in the business world. OL-kei, or OL-type, magazines are targeted towards OLs in their late 20s and early 30s.
MORE is the grown-up version of CanCam and Non-no. The clothing also tends to be more expensive. Other magazines along the lines of MORE are with, Oggi, and MISS.
An-An is marketed towards women in their 20s and 30s. They feature a lot of recipes and lifestyle tips, including regular issues on culinary arts and interior design.
GINZA magazine is high fashion and expensive brand names. This is where you look for ways to style your Chanel or your Bottega Veneta.
Popteen is one of the most popular magazines geared towards followers of the fashion subculture called gyaru. It’s full of elaborate makeup and hair tutorials.
Ageha is Popteen’s older sister. While those who aren’t actively part of the gyaru subculture could still employ some of the tips in Popteen in their daily lives, Ageha is marketed towards people who live and breathe hime gyaru, which is very over the top princess-y.
Zipper showcases street fashion and the latest trends in Harajuku. The fashion tends to be off the beaten path, and they focus a lot on indie brands and vintage clothing. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was a Zipper model way before she ever stepped into a recording studio!
Kera is sort of a catch-all subculture magazine. It usually features punk or alternative style clothing, but the stylists pick and choose pieces from a large range of brands and styles.
