It’s a mystery…
I was so surprised when I saw the statistics which says that the number of patients of cancer and people who die due to cancer in Okinawa is the lowest in Japan.
Why did I get surprised?
Because many Okinawans drink a lot, and a lot of people in Okinawa smoke.
I’ve been told that drinking too much and smoking are really bad for health, so I never thought Okinawa would have the least cancer patients.
Patients with cancer
According to the statistic by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of patients with cancer per 10 thousand is 86.26, while the average is 119.47.
Death due to cancer : female
According to the statistic by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number women who die due to cancer in Okinawa is 146.73 per 100 thousand, while the average is 200.60.
Death due to cancer : male
According to the statistic by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number women who die due to cancer in Okinawa is 225.13 persons per 100 thousand, while the average is 317.26.
Let’s guess why there are less cancer patients in Okinawa.
Here are the reasons which I guess…
①Relaxing life style
Relaxing life style
Most people in Okinawa are laid-back, happy, and positive.
When I moved out from there, it was kind of surprising that there were just so many people who would always worry too much or think negatively.
It wasn’t what I used to see.
In Okinawa, people laugh, drink, eat, enjoy music and just take it easy all the time.
This relaxing life style might be the key of health.
The average temperature in Okinawa is 23°C(73°F), and it never gets too cold or too hot.
The average temperature in January, which is the coldest month is, 17°C(63°F), and in August, which is the hottest month is, 29°C(84°F).
It’s really a comfortable climate!
In Fukui, where I live now, it snows a lot and gets really cold in winter, and really hot and humid in summer. It’s not only in Fukui, but It gets really hot in summer and really cold in winter in most prefectures.
This climate often makes me feel tired or sick.
So, I guess having such a mild climate like Okinawa is really good for health.
My sister and my son on January 2nd, 2008
We decided to go to the beach since it was a little hot that day!
Me, my son and friends, on January 2nd, 2008
One of my friends swam.
The water in Okinawa in January is actually warmer then the water in Fukui in August.
Okinawan food is really healthy and so is Japanese food.
I don’t think there are a big nutritional difference.
But there is one thing which is very different…
Okinawan people drink tea a lot.
When I was a child, I always had tea at home.
Many people who visit Okinawa find say they are surprised when they notice that sanpin cha is the best selling drink there.
In Okinawa, there are so many kinds of local tea which people in other places in Japan don’t drink, such as Sanpin cha(jasmine tea), ucchin cha(turmeric tea), goya cha(bitter melon tea), dokudami cha(chameleon plant tea), tochu cha(hardy rubber tree tea)…etc There are many nutritional advantages of drinking those kinds of tea.
So, drinking Okinawan tea might be one of the reasons.
