The Shiba Inu (or Shiba-ken) is Japan’s quintessential dog. He’s usually named Taro, which is roughly equivalent to Spot. There may even be several types of Shiba around, although yours truly only ever sees one around: the adorable kind.

I love dogs, but usually kept big ones like Golden Retrievers back home; ask my Japanese friends, and they’ll tell you they keep Shibas because they’re small enough to fit in the apartment without causing too much of a fuss! But what they really mean is that once you lay eyes on one of these guys, there’s no going back. Let’s look at a set of photos that will make you a Shiba believer, too!

“Yeah, so I’m cute. Whatcha gonna do?”

He’s absolutely calm one minute…

…and totally snarly the next! Cute either way, though.

This dog either did something really bad, or wants something really bad. Basically, “really good” isn’t an option.

These guys are best butts…er, buds. Sorry.

Think he’s feeling blue? Or is it just the deck-post?

NOT a morning dog, I’m guessing.

Well, THIS just takes the cake.

Two dogs having fun on the beach. Very cute, but not pun-worthy!

He seems unbelievably lifelike for an Ikea toy.

Well, I’m sure we’ll have more great animal photos for you in good time. Until then, treat your dog/cat/whatever kindly, and take plenty of pictures of your own!
