5. Kagetsuen [Sengokuhara]

Traveling with little ones? This hotel just might be for you. Hotel Kagetsuen is located in the Sengokuhara area surrounded by the Hakone mountain range. The location is a bit remote, but the natural environment provides a quiet getaway from the bustle of the city.

There are various room types available to suit the number of guests. The Semi-Western room with a tatami area and the Japanese room are both available for groups of four or five. There is also a “family bath” for those who wish to use the bath in private. Most of the guest rooms have a private bathroom, but consider it a valuable opportunity to enjoy the typical Japanese onsen.

Yuugiriso accommodates its guests in a traditional tatami room with futon bedding. The biggest bonus of this is that a full course kaiseki (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner) is served right within the comfort and privacy of your own room! 8. Hotel-Tukinoya [Miyanoshita]

Another authentic Japanese ryokan is Tukinoya, which has been operating since 1911. It is situated in the center of the tourist area of Hakone so it has great access to the major attractions. The friendly neighborhood has a local feel and you can expect a warm, hospitable service from the ryokan owners. 

The onsen here is said to have healed the wounds of the samurai lords back in the day. Guests are free to book the three baths available at the ryokan for private use. 

Guests can choose a Japanese-style room or a modernized version featuring tatami rooms with beds. The spacious rooms are designed with large windows that let in abundant natural light, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. 

9. Sundance Resort Hakone Gora [Gora]

Located at the center of Hakone’s popular hot spring resort of Gora is the Sundance Resort. It is easily accessible by train and is only a hop and a skip away from Gora Station and other transportation services in the vicinity. 

Be prepared to pamper yourself with a relaxing dip in the onsen and fine Japanese dishes prepared with the seasonal and local ingredients of Hakone.

10. TKP LecTore Hakone Gora [Gora]

LecTore is another hotel in the Gora area with the closest station being Naka Gora Station, which is just 5 minutes away on foot. The hotel is recommended for those who wish to casually enjoy a nice Japanese onsen vacation without putting too much stress on the wallet. 

Here you can satisfy your palate with traditional Japanese cuisine of the season. Pictured above is the winter course that includes shabu-shabu (sliced meat parboiled with vegetables) and golden eye snapper simmered in a soy sauce-based sauce. Their breakfast buffet has a variety of Japanese and Western dishes that you can pick and choose from.

11. Hotel Hakone Powell [Sengokuhara]

Hotel Hakone Powell is a hot spring resort located in forested hills home to native birds. You can immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some great views of the mountains and lush greenery. If you’re the athletic type, you might enjoy their tennis courts and indoor pool, too.

The two public onsen facilities draw their hot springs from Owakudani and Gora. The onsen sourced from Owakudani is milky in color and is effective for ailments such as atopic dermatitis, chronic stationary psoriasis, diabetes, and skin infections. The Gora onsen is transparent in color and is said to relieve cut wounds, peripheral circulatory disorders, poor blood circulation, depression, and dry skin among others. Both offer spectacular views, and there is even an open-air bath adjacent to the Gora onsen.

Hotel Hakone Powell offers a variety of room types ranging in prices to fulfill the needs of the guests. They are spaciously designed and well-maintained with some rooms even offering a view of Mt. 12. Hotel Marroad Hakone [Gora]

Well-situated in the hilly mountains and surrounded by lush greenery is Hotel Marroad Hakone. The hotel is a comfortable walking distance from the nearest cable car station, but they also provide free shuttle buses to and from Gora Station for those who find it a challenge to walk the steep hills.

The onsen facility includes indoor and outdoor baths that feature natural hot springs sourced from Owakudani, as well as a sauna to provide relaxation as you wind down for the day. The open-air onsen is particularly pleasant on a clear night when the stars and the moon can be observed shining brightly in the sky.

The guest quarters range in style from Western to Japanese-Western (Western beds in a tatami room), and are relatively roomy and comfortably furnished. Their full course French dinner and the breakfast buffet are also highly acclaimed, so do make sure to inquire about the meal choices.

13. Gora Hotel Paipu No Kemuri [Gora]

Conveniently located near Gora Station, Paipu No Kemuri offers affordable lodging complete with onsen and satisfying buffets for both dinner and breakfast. 

The onsen is sourced from Gora, and guests can enjoy the hotel’s indoor and outdoor baths. There is also a private bath available upon request if you pay a slightly extra fee.

Guest rooms can accommodate up to four people in a room and all are furnished with beds, a bathroom and toilet, and free Wi-Fi. What’s more, the neighborhood is dotted with shops and restaurants so there’ll be plenty of activities to enjoy nearby.

14. Hakone Kogen Hotel [Moto Hakone]

Hakone Kogen Hotel is not the most accessible lodging when traveling by train; however, its slightly remote location makes for a quiet getaway surrounded by a rich natural environment.

The onsen facilities provide two different types of hot springs that have varying therapeutic benefits due to their distinctive water qualities. The public baths, both indoor and outdoor, are large enough to stretch out and completely immerse your body in. Private onsen are also available with an additional fee. 

Guests will be treated with omotenashi (hospitality) from the staff as they make themselves at home in the spacious Japanese-style tatami rooms. This is a superb location to stay with children or in large groups. Some of the rooms are designed with a wooden terrace that opens to the garden, so guests can enjoy the fresh air and panoramic view. 

15. Itoen Hotel Hakone Yumoto [Yumoto Chaya]

Another hotel that is great value for the money is Itoen Hotel Hakone Yumoto. Budget travelers can still have a pleasurable stay that includes relaxing onsen and sauna, hearty meals, and free karaoke. 

There are large public hot springs as well as an open-air bath which are said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, recovery from illness, recovery from fatigue, and improved overall health.

Most of the rooms at this hotel are Japanese-style with futon, and since the futon can be stored away, there is plenty of space even if you are traveling in a group. 

16. Hakone Lake Hotel [Moto Hakone]

Designed under the concept of “a casual resort”, Odakyu Hakone Lake Hotel offers a pleasant vacationing location right near Lake Ashinoko at very reasonable prices. With the lake and the surrounding tourist attractions just a few minutes walk away, it is an ideal hotel at which to base your trip. 

The recently renovated natural hot spring bath with a sauna is available from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm, and from 5:30 am to 9:30 am. The onsen is stylishly decorated with luscious greenery that is in sync with the serenity of the surrounding nature.

The guest rooms have also been upgraded with modern Japanese features; though somewhat compact, they still offer a comfortable space for the guests. Keep in mind that most of the rooms are not equipped with a private bath and some require shared toilets, so make sure to book according to your personal requirements. Pictured above is the largest room option, the Japanese-Western room, which can house up to 6 people and comes with a private toilet. 

17. Yumoto Fujiya Hotel [Hakone Yumoto]

Looking to spend an active and fun-packed vacation with the whole family? Yumoto Fujiya Hotel is situated just 3 minutes away from Hakone Yumoto Station on foot with easy access to the major sightseeing spots in the area. There is also a car rental service on the property to make it even easier to explore the area with accompanying children or seniors. In addition, there are extra amenities for rent that cater to small children such as children’s sleepwear, baby toilet seat, bath chair, etc., and on the 2nd floor of the hotel is a kid’s playroom that is stocked with books and toys.

The onsen facilities have indoor and outdoor baths that are enclosed within the forested hills so you can relax and absorb the bounties of nature with all five of your senses. A private bath is also available to guests for an extra fee.

Western, Japanese, and Japanese-Western rooms are available to the guests. Again, if you are traveling with a family, there is the option of booking the Japanese-Western family room where you can stay with your whole family (up to four people) in a spacious room with a view. The outdoor pool is open during the summer season so make sure to pack your swimsuits, too!

18. Mount View Hakone [Sengokuhara]

Mount View Hakone is a traditional Japanese ryokan located in the hilly Sengokuhara area, and although it is remote, there is a bus stop in front of the ryokan for those traveling by train. Once there, you’ll be able to enjoy the magnificent natural surroundings.

The shared onsen facilities feature natural hot spring water called Nigori-yu, aptly named due to its milky and cloudy color. There are three types of private baths that guests can reserve with an additional fee. The view of the bamboo grove from the onsen is a sight to see!

The rooms are designed in the traditional Japanese ryokan style with tatami rooms and futon bedding accompanied by lavish kaiseki cuisine and a Japanese breakfast. At Mount View Hakone, guests can experience the full Hakone onsen culture! 

19. Ashinoko Ichinoyu [Moto Hakone]

Ashinoko Ichinoyu is located very close to the cruise boat terminal and the ropeway station at Lake Ashinoko, which is a great area to begin your Hakone tour. 

Guests will be able to enjoy a nice and relaxing onsen time. What the public onsen lacks in extravagance, it makes up for with a private open-air bath which guests can book upon arrival at no extra charge.

20. Ichinoyu Honkan [Tonosawa]

This riverside ryokan is known for its historical Japanese building that was constructed in the style of a traditional sukiya (tea ceremony house). Ichinoyu Honkon is bursting with Japanese ambiance and is a highly recommended spot for those who are staying in an onsen ryokan for the first time.

The large public onsen are indoor baths that overlook the Hayakawa Valley, and there is also a private onsen that is available for reservation. 

All of the guest rooms overlook the streaming river with a view of the surrounding forest and are designed in the very authentic Japanese ryokan style. What’s more, this inn offers rooms with a private outdoor or partially open-air onsen for you to enjoy as many times and however long as you want!

Hakone Hotel is a lakeside resort with gorgeous views of Lake Ashinoko and Mt. Fuji. The hotel offers a free shuttle from Odawara Station, so it can be easily accessed by trains. 

The onsen facilities are stylishly designed and offer a natural environment for you to enjoy during a nice relaxing bath time.

Although mostly Western, the guest rooms are very spacious and offer magnificent views from the windows. If you’re lucky you may even be able to see Mt. Fuji.
