I guess Mister Donut was a Boston chain that, for some weird reason, started popping up all over Asia. It’s got many of the same mouth-watering doughnuts many of us know, and some we don’t–the main difference seems to be that Mister Donut isn’t afraid to pile on the cute! Come with me, you’ll see.

Mister Donut (“Misdo”) has many smile-inducing animal mascots, but the main one is this adorable lion, which is so popular that there are many products devoted to him. Why a lion, you ask? If you haven’t figured it out, just wait…

These two groovy girls have solved the mystery with the above doughnuts, which look just like a lion’s mane in different varieties. Cute, right? And very tasty too, I can tell you.

The sweetness doesn’t stop there. For this recent “Peanuts” campaign, Misdo went all out and made Snoopy and Woodstook-shaped doughnuts! The eyes are just chocolate disks shoved in just the right place–kind of brilliant!

You might not think so, but in terms of decorations, Halloween is a big deal in Japan. Here’s a sampling of some Halloween treats. I’m pretty sure the guy on the right is Doraemon the Cat–not scary at all, but fun.

They do shapes, too. This star-shaped doughnut looks ordinary enough, but it actually tastes like Calpis Soda, which is a famous brand in Japan. I didn’t believe it either, but it’s actually very good!

Pretty sure this is Hong Kong or something, but they have green tea doughnuts in Japan too. Not for everybody, but worth trying just to say you did.

When it comes to my own Misdo experience, I’ll have what she’s having–an “old fashioned” doughnut and a plain sugar, no frills. Just great with coffee, which is not only excellent at Misdo but also with endless refills!

If you’re in the mood for sweet-cute in Japan, just look for the above sign. You may meet a lion, but he won’t eat you–he’ll just offer you a piece of his mane.
