What is Character Bento?
A Character Bento is a themed lunch (character themes like Hello Kitty or Totoro) put in a lunch box that children love. It’s called Kyaraben in Japan. You can entertain your kids while feeding them with healthy food. It’s also a great way to make them eat vegetables!
How to : The essentials
Shape the rice into the character you like and use condiment to color it.
To make a Character bento you will definitely need seaweed to make your characters. Also a design knife and a pincette for more precision.
First step : Draw the character you want to create on a parchment paper
Second step : Put the parchment paper on your seaweed sheet and secure. Then cut it following the lines using your design knife.
Third step : Use the pincette to move the different parts (that you can put on a slice of cheese or ham)
Sliced cheese is often used to make the face of the characters or any body or face part that is white.
We usually use a toothpick to cut it and try to not touch it with our fingers so it doesn’t melt.
Omelette can be used to make the blond hair of the character or yellow parts.
Parts like eyes mouth and nose can give life to a simple rice ball but are small so difficult to cut. Having cutters like those will make it easier for you to make cute bentos
