Okonomiyaki is a dish that the Kansai region, Osaka in particular, is very proud of. Lots of wheat flour dissolved in water is added to Japanese yams and cabbage, then grilled into a round shape along with thin slices of pork. It's a meal that can be found not just at restaurants but also at yatai stalls, making it a fast food loved by people of all ages. If you visit Osaka, there's definitely enough okonomiyaki restaurants to make your head spin. Since you're already there, you should definitely try Osaka-style okonomiyaki!

Mizuno is the most popular okonomiyaki restaurant in the Dotonbori area. Average price $6-15.

2. Okonomiyaki Momiji (お好み焼 もみじ), Tanimachi 9 Cho-me

This is the most popular okonomiyaki restaurant in the Uehonmachi/Tanimachi Kyuchome area, and sits just 3 minutes away from Tanimachi Kyuchome station. They're famous for their sechiyaki, which is a dish from Gobo, Wakayama. It's a kind of yakisoba that doesn't use wheat flour as a thickener, it only uses eggs.

3. Houzenji Sanpei (法善寺 三平), Nanba

This is a well-respected shop in the famous sightseeing area of Houzenji Yokocho. The batter is fluffy, the ingredients are piled high, and the suji/negi/konnyaku okonomiyaki that has a mountain of scallions is the most popular meal. Average price is $7-15.

4. Okonomiyaki Chibou (お好み焼 千房 千日前本店), Nanba

This is a popular okonomiyaki chain restaurant that even has franchises overseas. The main branch is in the Nanba/Sennichimae area. They have a wide variety of meals on their menu including steak, seafood, okonomiyaki, and even course meals. Average price is $8-15.

5. Purejidento Chibou (ぷれじでんと 千房), Shinsaibashi

This is a sister restaurant to the Chibou chain. It's a high-class okonomiyaki/teppanyaki restaurant. Because of its aim towards luxury, you can get high-grade steaks and seafood here as well. Average price is $15-80.

6. Kiji (きじ), Umeda

This famous okonomiyaki store in the Umeda area is so popular there are often lines to get in. The recommended dish is modanyaki, which is okonomiyaki and yakisoba piled on top of each other and grilled together! Average price $8-15.

7. Yukari (ゆかり 曽根崎本店), Umeda

This is a beloved okonomiyaki restaurant in Umeda that opened in 1950. They offer okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and negiyaki that have been perfected over the years. Average price $7-15.

8. Tsuruhashi Fugetsu (鶴橋風月本店), Tsuruhashi

The unique point about their okonomiyaki is that the batter, full of cabbage, is slowly grilled over low heat until done. Its fluffy softness melts in your mouth deliciously. Though it is a nationwide chain and in Osaka the store in Fukudaya Mall is more famous, if you want to eat the true taste of it, go to the Tsuruhashi store. Average price $7-15.

9. Sennichimae Hatsuse (千日前はつせ), Nanba

This restaurant is famous in the area and has been around since 1945. It's always been do-it-yourself style where the customer grills their own meal. The okonomiyaki batter is made with a large amount of cabbage, Japanese yams, Japanese-style dashi, and Chinese-soup mixed with three kind of flour. Average price $7-10.

10. Okaru (おかる), Nanba

This is a restaurant where you can truly enjoy traditional Osaka-style okonomiyaki. They also have a heart-warming service where they draw characters on your freshly grilled okonomiyaki with mayonnaise. Average price $7-15.

11. Omoni (オモニ), Tsuruhashi

This is a rather famous restaurant in the Tsuruhashi where many celebrities eat and is often featured on TV. Tsuruhashi is a little ways away from most of the sightseeing spots, so you can also enjoy the regular residential streets that people live on. Average price $7-15.

12. Ikuno Okonomiyaki Momotarou (生野お好み焼 桃太郎), Tsuruhashi

This restaurant's famous dish is the imo-suji-negi-tama okonomiyaki that uses potatoes! It's also famous enough to be called Tsuruhashi's most popular restaurant. Average price $7-15.

13. Tomiko (登美子), Shin-Osaka

This is a famous okonomiyaki restaurant in the Shin-Osaka station area. This small stop, mostly managed by female staff, is always teeming with customers stopping by on their way home from work. Average price $7-15.

14. Ajinoiya (味乃家), Nanba

This veteran okonomiyaki shop in Nanba is always teeming with customers. At a glance, their dishes look like regular okonomiyaki, but the taste is superb. The yakisoba is also a must-try so why don't you try both? Average price $7-15.

15. Yamamoto (やまもと 本店), Juso

This restaurant is famous for using lots of scallions. This restaurant, just a short way away from Umeda near Juusou Station, boasts Osaka's best negiyaki. Unlike okonomiyaki that's eaten with sauce and mayonnaise, their negiyaki is made with a soy sauce based. If you want to eat negiyaki while you're in Osaka, this is your number one spot to try.
