1. Chibachan - Ueno First Branch [Ueno]

The picture above depicts "Baka Mori" (Crazy-Sized) Fried Chicken (950 yen), which has 3 times as many pieces as a normal plate of fried chicken. Other than this, they have a lot of other popular large-sized meals. You can make a reservation for up to 80 people, so if you are throwing a party for a large number of people, this place would come in handy.

This is "O-baka Mori" (Crazier-Sized) (1,382 yen) Fried Chicken, which has 10 times as many pieces as a normal plate of fried chicken. The portion is so much that it makes you wonder if you can really finish it!

This is a plate of "Mentai Yakisoba Baka Mori" (Crazy-Sized Noodles With Pollock Roe) (950 yen). Other than this, they have other popular meals available in extra large sizes, such as chicken wings, sausages, french fries, and radish salad. Drinks are available at a reasonable price, so if you want to eat a lot but do not want to spend a lot, this is the place to be!

2. Go! Go! Curry - Ueno Okachimachi Branch [Okachimachi]

A gorilla image in front of the store is the symbol for Go! Go! Curry. They serve a unique style of curry called Kanazawa Curry, which originates from Kanazawa, Ishikawa.

The signature meal here is "Chicken Katsu Curry" (business size is 890 yen). The distinctive features of this curry - thick black curry sauce, sliced cabbage, and chicken katsu with sauce - are all very appetizing.

The curry in the picture above is the "World Champion Curry" (2,550 yen <the price varies depending on the branch>). Its weight is impressive at 2.5kg, and only 5 plates are available in a day. If you think you are a big eater, you should definitely try this!

3. Pasta-ya - Okachimachi Branch [Ueno]

Pasta-ya is a restaurant that offers big pasta dishes with a lot of delicious and healthy homegrown vegetables (such as tomatoes) for a cheap price.

 

This 28cm pizza (11 inches) is the "Garden Tomato Pizza" (600 yen). The tomatoes used here are all specially grown in the shop's own garden. Oven grilled pizzas are one of popular meals here.

Here is an extra large pasta dish (750g), the "Rank B Spaghetti With Salt and Chicken" (680 yen). There are cheese and tabasco containers on each table, so you can change up the taste a bit if you want!

4. Naporitan Pancho - Okachimachi [Ueno]

Naporitan is a popular pasta dish created in Japan (as a spin-off of Napolitan), and as their name suggests, this restaurant is famous for their delicious naporitan. The thick noodles used here are pretty filling, and even better, you can make it large for no extra cost!

Do not forget that you can add toppings such as fried eggs, cheese, bacon, and burgers to your pasta. If you cannot pick a topping, you can always go for everything! The picture above is "Naporitan With Everything" (1,240 yen).

Other than naporitan, they also have bolognese pasta. You can add the same variety of toppings to your meat sauce as well, so try this dish out too!

5. Wakasaya - Ueno Branch [Okachimachi]

Other than their speciality dish - which is kaisen-don (sushi rice bowl topped with sashimi) - Wakasaya has a wide variety of don (rice bowl) meals. The picture above is of "Uni (sea urchin), Negitoro (tuna with green onions), and Ikura (salmon roe)-don" (1,320 yen), which is one of the most popular meals here. Also, their lunch bowl of the day is only 500 yen. What's on the bowl depends on the day, so if you are looking to try it, please ask the chef!

Named after the restaurant, "Wakasa-don" (1,000 yen) is topped with a lot of negitoro, tuna, shrimp, salmon, and engawa (fluke fin).

The big rice bowl pictured above is "Bikkuri-don" (3,980 yen). It is 6 times bigger than a normal sized rice bowl and comes with a big miso soup bowl that is 3 times bigger than a normal one. If you finish both of these meals within 15 minutes, you won't have to pay anything as a reward! If you feel that you are up for the challenge, why not take a shot at it!

6. Saito [Iriya]

Saito is a popular seafood restaurant that gets a lot of media attention. The picture above is of their signature dish, the "Kaisen-don (Extra Helping of Seafood)" (1,050 yen). The outstanding feature of this meal is the unusual amount of fish topping the rice! For this price and this quality, it is an absolute steal!

 

This is the "Salmon and Ikura-don" (1,150 yen). The rice is completely covered by salmon and ikura (salted salmon roe), and it gives you a kind of satisfaction that can only be experienced here.

 

If you are not a big fan of raw fish, it is recommended to try their "Ten-don" (1,050 yen). It is a rice bowl topped with deep-fried food. It is really big, and the crispy fries are pretty good.

7. Kushiage Juraku - Ueno Branch [Ueno]

If you want to enjoy a popular and authentic Japanese pub, Kushiage Juraku (Ueno Branch) is where you should go. They have extra large meals here too!

This is a popular dish, "Shibire Pork Plate" (550 yen). It is a plateful (or even more) of pork fried with ginger. The spiciness of Japanese pepper is pretty addictive!

This is "Giga Shibire Pork-don" (1,780 yen). 1.5kg of rice with fried pork is served in a bowl with a 20cm (8 inches) diameter. It will be difficult to eat it all alone, so it is recommended to share it between several people.

 

Tonpeiyaki made with thinly sliced pork and eggs is also recommended. It is one of the soul foods for people in Osaka, so if you want to taste it while in Tokyo, definitely check it out!

8. Katsusen [Ueno]

 

As the name suggests, Katsusen is a restaurant popular for their delicious "katsu" (cutlet). The popular meal here is the "Katsu-don Set" (700 yen). The freshly fried katsu is very thick and hot! The extra katsu sauce soaks well into the rice, so you can enjoy the great taste at the very end.

 

Pour some katsu sauce on the katsu-don and you've got yourself a "Sauce Katsu-don"! It comes with a half-boiled egg. If you like a strong taste, you could add some more sauce at your table to make a bowl of your own.

 

The picture above is of "Ball Menchi With Cheese and Chicken Katsu Teishoku" (720 yen). Teishoku is a set meal that comes with rice and miso soup. Other than this, they have a lot of other teishoku dishes.

9. Yamabe - Ueno Branch [Ueno Okachimachi]

 

Yamabe is a restaurant with a traditional Japanese atmosphere. There are counter seats on the first floor, and table seats on the second.

 

The popular dish here is "Pork Loin Katsu Teishoku" (750 yen). For this much food, the price is really cheap. The thickly sliced pork is deep-fried, and it is so crispy and good! 

 

They have other fried meals here. The picture above is of the "Mixed and Fried Teishoku", which has deep-fried katsu skewers, fried shrimp, and fried fish.

10. Tenmasa [Naka-Okachimachi]

 

The No.1 most popular meal here is "Edokko Tendon" (850 yen), which has deep-fried anago (saltwater eel), shrimp, greens, and squid. They are so big that they stick out of the bowl. They are all fresh and crispy.

 

There are only 5 bowls of "Anago-don" (1,000 yen) available during lunch time. As many as 3 eels are served in each bowl. This dish is dedicated to all anago lovers!

 

Other than rice bowls, they have teishoku (set meals that come with a bowl of rice and miso soup) as well. You can choose either white or multigrain rice for your teishoku. It is difficult to make crispy tempura at home, so try the ones made by pros!
